Don’t know the lingo? Let us light the way!
B
- Bhang
- Bhang is an edible preparation made from the leaves and flower of the female cannabis plant, traditionally used in India for both medicinal and recreational purposes. It’s commonly consumed during cultural and religious festivals such as Holi and Shivaratri. Bhang can be mixed into drinks, such as the popular “bhang lassi” or “bhang thandai,” or mixed into food items like sweets and snacks.
C
- Cannabinoid
- Cannabinoids are a class of diverse chemical compounds that act on cannabinoid receptors in cells, altering neurotransmitter release in the brain. They are commonly found in the cannabis plant (Cannabis sativa), but can also be produced synthetically or occur naturally in the body (endocannabinoids).
- CB1 Receptors
- Cannabinoid receptors that are primarily found in the brain and central nervous system.
- CB2 Receptors
- Cannabinoid receptors that are primarily found in the immune system and peripheral organs.
- CBD (Cannabidiol)
- CBD is a non-psychoactive compound found in cannabis. It’s known for its therapeutic properties, including pain relief, anti-inflammatory effects, and anxiety reduction. Unlike THC, CBD does not produce a high and is often used for medicinal purposes.
- Concentrates
- Products made by extracting cannabinoids and terpenes from the cannabis plant, which results in a highly potent substance.
D
- Decarboxylation
- Decarboxylation is the process of heating cannabis to activate its cannabinoids, converting non-psychoactive compounds into their active forms. For example, THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) is converted into THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the compound responsible for the psychoactive effects of cannabis.
E
- Endocannabinoid
- Endocannabinoids are naturally occurring compounds in the human body that bind to cannabinoid receptors. They play a crucial role in regulating physiological processes, such as mood, pain sensation, appetite, and memory. The endocannabinoid system helps maintain homeostasis within the body.
G
- G13
- G13 is a legendary indica-dominant strain wrapped in mystery. According to cannabis folklore, it was developed by the U.S. government in a secret lab, though no one really knows the full truth. What we do know: it delivers heavy, relaxing effects.
- Ganja
- A common slang term for cannabis, originating from Sanskrit and popularized in Jamaica.
- Genotype
- Genotype refers to the genetic makeup of a cannabis plant. It determines the plant’s potential characteristics, like THC/CBD levels, aroma, growth pattern, and resistance to pests. While the environment plays a role, genotype sets the blueprint.
- Germination
- Germination is the first stage of a cannabis plant’s life, when the seed cracks open and sprouts a root. It’s an important step for growers, as healthy germination sets the stage for strong, productive plants.
- GMO (Garlic Cookies)
- GMO doesn’t mean genetically modified. Also known as Garlic Cookies, this potent strain is a cross between Girl Scout Cookies and Chemdawg. It’s known for its funky, garlic-like aroma and strong body high.
- Grinder
- A tool used to break down cannabis flower into smaller, more manageable pieces for rolling or packing.
H
- Hashish
- Hashish, commonly known as hash, is a concentrated form of cannabis made by collecting and compressing the trichomes—the resinous glands on the cannabis plant that contain the highest concentration of cannabinoids, such as THC and CBD.
- Hemp
- Hemp is a variety of the Cannabis Sativa plant species grown specifically for industrial uses. Unlike other cannabis plants, hemp contains very low levels of THC (less than 0.3%), making it non-psychoactive. It’s used to produce a wide range of products, including textiles, paper, biodegradable plastics, and health foods.
I
- Indica
- Cannabis Indica is a species of cannabis known for its relaxing and sedative effects. Indica plants are shorter and bushier with wide leaves and are grown in cooler climates. They are commonly used in the evening or at night to promote relaxation, pain relief, and sleep.
J
- Joint
- A joint is one of the most classic and popular ways to consume cannabis. It’s made by rolling ground cannabis flower in a thin rolling paper, often with a crutch or filter at the tip. Joints are portable, easy to share, and a go-to for casual smoking sessions.
Unlike blunts, which are rolled using tobacco-based cigar or blunt wraps and often have a stronger, harsher smoke, joints use paper made from hemp, rice, or other non-tobacco materials, making them a cleaner option for those who want to avoid nicotine.
K
- Kief
- Kief refers to the fine, powdery crystals that fall off cannabis buds, technically called trichomes. It’s rich in cannabinoids and terpenes, making it more potent than regular flower. Many people collect kief from their grinders to sprinkle on bowls or press into hash.
- Kush
- Kush refers to a family of indica-dominant strains originating from the Hindu Kush mountain region. These strains are known for their earthy, piney flavors and relaxing, full-body effects. Popular kush strains include OG Kush, Master Kush, and Bubba Kush.
L
- Live Resin
- Live resin is a high-quality cannabis concentrate made from fresh, flash-frozen plants instead of dried buds. This process preserves more terpenes and results in a flavorful, aromatic experience. It’s popular among concentrate lovers for its bold effects and rich taste.
- Linalool
- Linalool is a terpene found in some cannabis strains, as well as in lavender and other plants. It gives off a floral, slightly spicy aroma and is associated with calming and anti-anxiety effects. Strains high in linalool are often used for relaxation or sleep.
M
- Myrcene
- Myrcene is one of the most abundant terpenes in cannabis and contributes to earthy, musky aromas. It’s believed to enhance the sedative effects of THC, making it common in indica strains. Myrcene is also found in mangoes and hops.
N
- Nugs
- “Nugs” is slang for cannabis flower buds, typically the dense, sticky parts harvested for consumption. Quality nugs are often frosty with trichomes and have a strong aroma. They’re a quick visual cue for potency and freshness when selecting your stash.
P
- Pre-roll
- A pre-roll is a ready-to-smoke joint sold at dispensaries. Pre-rolls come in various sizes and strains, sometimes infused with concentrates or kief. They’re perfect for beginners or convenient sessions.
S
- Sativa
- Cannabis Sativa is a species of cannabis known for its uplifting and energizing effects. Sativa plants are tall with thin leaves and are commonly grown in warm climates. They are often used during the day for their stimulating and cerebral effects and are popular for activities that require creativity and focus.
T
- Terpenes
- Terpenes are aromatic compounds found in many plants, including cannabis. They give cannabis its distinctive smell and flavor. Terpenes also have various therapeutic effects and can influence the overall experience of a cannabis strain. Some common terpenes include myrcene, limonene, and pinene. Each terpene has unique properties, such as anti-inflammatory, anti-anxiety, or mood-enhancing effects.
- THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol)
- THC is the primary psychoactive compound found in cannabis. It is responsible for the “high” that comes with marijuana use. THC interacts with the endocannabinoid system in the brain to produce effects such as euphoria, altered perception of time, and increased appetite.
- Tinctures
- Tinctures are liquid extracts made by soaking cannabis flower or isolates in alcohol or other solvents. They are used to deliver cannabinoids such as THC and CBD in a concentrated form and are typically administered sublingually (under the tongue) for quick absorption.
V
- Vijaya
- Vijaya is a term used in traditional Indian medicine (Ayurveda) to refer to cannabis. It is recognized for its medicinal properties and has been used historically in various forms to treat ailments such as pain, anxiety, and digestive issues.
